Where Are They Now – Roma’s 2010/11 Primavera Champions

After Roma won their eighth Primavera league title last weekend, asroma.co.uk looks at the last Giallorossi squad to win the Campionato Primavera and where they are now.

Goalkeepers

Simone Perilli. Perilli wasn’t even 16 when he was promoted to the title-winning Primavera squad; he moved on to Sassuolo in 2012 but was released last summer and is now playing for Reggiana in the Lega Pro.

Mirko Pigliacelli. The highly-rated keeper’s contract with Roma expired in 2012 and he moved on a free transfer to Parma, but he has struggled to settle at a club since. He helped Frosinone to promotion to Serie A in 2014/15, playing 17 times, and after signing for Pescara at the end of the season he spent the 2015/16 campaign on loan at Pro Vercelli.

Francesco Proietti Gaffi. Proietti Gaffi spent the last six months with Pontedera after starting the season with Feralpisalò.

Defenders

Guglielmo Amendola. The back up left back to Paolo Frascatore, Amendola has since toyed with the film industry, acting alongside Gerard Depardieu in Niente può fermarci in 2013.

Luca Antei. Roma’s best defender in the Final 8 of the title-winning season, Antei has been with Sassuolo since January 2013 and was signed outright by the Neroverdi last summer. He suffered a serious cruciate ligament injury in March 2015 but returned 341 days later against Atalanta. Antei has also made 10 appearances for the Italy Under-21s.

Federico Barba. Barba is currently plying his trade in Germany with Stuttgart, but made only two appearances after signing on loan in February as Die Roten were relegated from the Bundesliga for just the second time in their history.

Francesco Caratelli. Caratelli was one of many Roma youth players to be farmed out to Pescara, but is now playing for Pomezia in the Eccellenza, the fifth division of Italian football.

Fabrizio Carboni. Captain of the Allievi Nazionali side that won the title in 2009/10, Carboni almost made the breakthrough to the first team but was injured by Matteo Brighi in training. Sold to Feralpisalò in 2013, he is still with the Verdazzurri.

Francesco De Prosperis. He was released by Roma and is currently unattached.

Paolo Frascatore. Frascatore is still owned by Roma, but is yet to make a senior appearance for the Giallorossi. After being loaned out to Benevento, Sassuolo, Pescara, Reggina and Pistoiese, he spent last year on loan at Reggiana.

Sebastian Mladen. After winning the Primavera title, Mladen returned to Romania on loan to Targoviste. His contract with Roma was terminated to allow him to sign for Südtirol on a permanent basis, and he has now racked up 50 appearances for the Lega Pro side.

Alessandro Orchi. The elegant centre back joined Catanzaro in 2012, where he has been slowly establishing himself as a squad player and played 19 times last year.

Stefano Sabelli. Sabelli left Roma in 2012 for Bari, where he made 125 appearances in all competitions until he signed on loan for Carpi this January, but was not able to keep them in Serie A. He has made 10 appearances for Italy’s Under-21s.

Midfielders

Alessandro Bascià. He made little impact on Roma’s Primavera side and dropped down to Italy’s amateur leagues after being released, last seen in 2013 for Club Atletico Centocelle.

Amato Ciciretti. Ciciretti notably imitated Francesco Totti by celebrating a goal for Messina in the derby against Reggina with a selfie. Although he was released by Roma in 2015 he is still wearing the Giallorossi colours with Benevento and enjoyed a successful season last term.

Marco Valerio Corsi. Used sparingly in the title-winning season, Corsi joined Siena in 2011 but suffered a cruciate ligament injury in December and retired soon after. He is now a sports lawyer.

Gianmarco Falasca. Falasca also left Roma’s Primavera in 2011, and is currently without a club after his Lazio contract expired in 2014.

Alessandro Florenzi. By far the most successful member of the title-winning side. He captained the Primavera team in 2010/11 before being loaned to Crotone, and at the insistence of Zdenek Zeman he was brought back to Roma in 2013. Florenzi has since made over 150 appearances for the Giallorossi and is now also part of the Italian national team.

Valerio Verre. One of the most talented players in this Primavera squad, Verre was bought outright by Udinese in 2014. He helped Perugia to a Serie B playoff spot last year and is now on the verge of promotion to Serie A with Pescara.

Federico Viviani. Another of the most promising players to emerge from the side, Viviani was a key player for Latina as they lost out on a place in Serie A in the 2013/14 playoff final. He was signed by Hellas Verona last summer for €4m, and has picked up 18 caps for the Azzurrini.

Forwards

Simone Bezziccheri. Bezziccheri is currently with Nuorese in Serie D, having previously turned out for teams including Lupa Roma and Maltese first division side Qormi.

Luca Bongiovanni. He struggled with injury after being used primarily from the bench in Andrea Stramaccioni’s Allievi side, and was released by Roma in 2011. Bongiovanni is currently without a club after short spells in the lower leagues with Nocerina, Alma Fano and Palestrina.

Danilo Buscia. The speedy forward was let go by Roma in 2012 and has not played since being released by Cynthia 1920 two years later.

Gianluca Caprari. A highly talented forward who is making such a name for himself with Pescara that Juventus have been credited with an interest in signing him this summer. He joined Pescara permanently from Roma at blind auction, leading his agent to say “the Giallorossi have made mistakes about youngsters in the past and we expect Roma will regret this one too.”

Louis Jerome Dieme. Dieme has been in Serie D ever since leaving Roma, most recently scoring 12 goals in 29 games for Città di Castello.

Gianluca Leonardi. Arrested in 2012 for robbing a prostitute while on loan at Cuneo, Leonardi is now with San Cesareo after a disappointing year at Rieti.

Mattia Montini. Montini scored all 3 of Roma’s goals in the Primavera final against Varese, but injuries have plagued him since with 3 operations in 4 years. Last year he endured a difficult year with the hapless Pro Patria, which saw him apologise to fans after a controversial celebration.

Giammario Piscitella. Still owned by Roma, Piscitella failed a drugs test in 2015 after testing positive for tuaminoheptane (commonly used in nasal decongestants). He spent the last few months of the 2015/16 season on loan at Bassano Virtus.

Matteo Politano. Politano is also still owned by Roma and has impressed on loan at Sassuolo this year, scoring his first Serie A goal against the Giallorossi in a 2-2 draw. The Neroverdi are likely to take up an option to buy him outright, but Roma have a counter-option should they wish to retain him.

Bongoura Thiam Ibrahima. Scored 4 in 8 games for the Primavera in 2010/11 but was blighted by injuries and didn’t make the step up. He was given another opportunity by Parma but spent 2015/16 in the Abruzzese regional leagues with ASD La Venere.

Alessandro Viscontini. The Primavera’s reserve striker who wasn’t used in the title-winning season, Viscontini has been without a club since 2014 following unsuccessful spells in the lower leagues.

Coach

Alberto De Rossi. The father of Daniele De Rossi has been Roma’s Primavera coach since 2003/04 and involved at various levels of the club’s youth setup for the last 20 years, and is currently under contract until 2018. De Rossi has often spoken of how he feels at home coaching youth players and preparing them for the senior levels, and the Giallorossi’s future is certainly in safe hands with him.

In questo caso non é questione di torto o ragione e la battutina ammetterai era veramente lieve. Mi fa piacere che citi Digne, perché partendo da lui proveró nuovamente a spiegare il concetto a me chiaro: secondo me Digne é un buon terzino, superiore alla media ma come tanti. Detto questo, penso che uno del suo livello in prospettiva si potrebbe individuare nelle giovanili e farlo crescere fino a diventare un Digne. Non stiamo parlando di un Totti che ne nasce uno ogni 50 anni o di un De Rossi che ne nasce uno ogni 20, stiamo parlando di un giocatore normalissimo in un ruolo dove non serve tecnica sublime o chissá quali caratteristiche. Allora il mio ragionamento é che se 5 anni fa qualcuno avesse individuate nel terzino sinistro della Primavera uno su cui poter investire e ci avesse creduto, adesso magari avresti un terzino titolare romano e romanista. Naturalmente ti prego di non sfoderare il nome di un terzino sinistro che NON ha sfondato, il discorso é ipotetico, ma a me sembra improbabile che in un settore giovanile curato ed esteso come quello della Roma (almeno finché Bruno Conti avrá voce in capitolo) non si riesca a trovaer ogni anno almeno un potenziale titolare. Quello che mi frega a me é che ultimamente non sono píú aggiornato come in passato, quando sapevo tutta la formazione della Primavera, avevo un'idea di chi fossero I migliori e facevo modeste previsioni su chi potesse divenatre "calciatore' come diceva Sdengo, am continuo a pensare che preferirei avere in rosa Politano e Verre piuttosto che Ucan e Vainquier, libero tu di pensarla all'opposto e di santificare il lavoro di Pallotta e Sabatini, io tengo per Bruno Conti.

Molto interessante, peccato solo manchi l'unica cosa che non é stata provata, cioé vedere uno di questi ragazzi crescere NELLA ROMA e non fuori dalla Roma. Viviani ad esempio aveva fatto buona impressione e avrebbe meritato di avere una possibilitá. Ripeto il concetto: non stiamo parlando della caccia al nuovo Totti, che temo sará infruttuosa per I prossimi 50 anni, ma della caccia al nuovo GIOCATORE NORMALE DA ROMA, quello che non puó essere peggio di certe pippe alla Jose Angel o di UPO tipo Ucan.

Infatti nel Sassuolo ci sono Antei, Pellegrini, Politano ed ora hanno preso anche Mazzitelli, quattro ragazzi usciti dalle giovanili della Roma negli ultimi cinque anni. Ma è il Sassuolo, una squadra che ogni anno lotta per salvarsi e qualsiasi cosa arriva in più è tutto di guadagnato. Mentre per la Roma, se non si qualifica in Champions ogni anno sono dolori.

appunto ... ma è talmente lineare come discorso che è pure inutile sottolinearlo... per quello sarebbe fondamentale avere le seconde squadre...perchè quando li mandi a giocare i giovani non sei sicuro che poi li facciano giocare se nn glieli vendi...e allora solo con riscatti e controriscatti puoi avere qualche possibilità di vederli giocare (tipo Florenzi) e riportarli a casa se sfondano... buttarli in campo nell'olimpico è un mandarli al massacro nel 90% dei casi...la lista è troppo lunga...

Forse perché nessuno li sa apprezzare e preferiscono comprare la pippa straniera che fa fico? In ogni caso, rinuncio definitivamente al tentative di farvi capire la mia posizione, che in quanto mia posizione mi posso permettere di avere indipendentemente dall'attuabilitá. Io non brucerei nessuno, se tutti I romanisti fossero come me, la Roma potrebbe essere il Sassuolo dei ricchi, invece di essere il Real dei poveri.

Ma perchè, tu parlando di te stesso ti dipingi come un personaggio normale ed anonimo, senza stranezze ed imprevedibilità? E su! Sabatini aveva di fronte un giornalista che voleva fare un pezzo di colore e lui, come si dice a Roma, gli ha dato la guazza, ovvero gli ha fatto una descrizione di sè sopra le righe. Che cacchio doveva raccontargli? "Mi sveglio ogni mattina alle sei, vado a messa alle sette facendo la comunione, poi lavoro fino alle nove di sera, torno a casa, ceno e guardo Bruno Vespa"? Andreotti faceva una vita simile e credo abbia fatto cose molto più terribili di Sabatini.
